Gamma Oryzanol*: An extract from rice bran oil, gamma oryzanol supplies ferulic acid. Japanese researchers have studied ferulic acid as a treatment for many disorders, including menopause. It appears to enhance the activity of the parasympathetic nervous system and to promote endorphin release by the hypothalamus, which may regulate blood vessel tone and influence hormonal release patterns. In studies, over half the women who took gamma oryzanol daily had a 50 percent or greater reduction in menopausal symptoms, especially hot flashes and anxiety. Although gamma oryzanol has not proven effective in reducing the risks of osteoporosis and cardiovascular disease, it is safe and non-toxic. Stress? Anti-stress effects, although not rigorously proven, were seen at both relatively low and high doses of Rice Bran Oil & Extract Gamma Oryzanol (10-300mg per day) in clinical trials. Since the mechanism is delivery of ferulic acid to the brain, it can be theorized that small amounts of ferulic acid should be equally or more effective than Gamma Oryzanol. For purposes of producing peak blood levels of ferulic acid, it is not clear whether Rice Bran Oil & Extract Gamma Oryzanol should be taken with meals or on an empty stomach.
